He Thinks Flies Are Better Than Crickets. Clearly, He’s an Idiot

We couldn’t use the Book of Pages to travel inter-dimensionally, so we needed to use the broken communicating mirror again. Unfortunately, we had three times the number of people as the last time, when we’d traveled to Bandy’s Joe’s dimension.

We stood in front of the mirror and stared into the fractured glass of the mirror, our expressions contemplative.

“Maybe Zoom and I can send you two at a time and come through last,” Joe suggested.

I knew that would be hard on the little frog and said so, earning myself a look of respect from Joe and a nod.

“Do you have a communicating mirror in your dimension?” Grym asked Joe.

“I do.”

“We could split up and use his mirror too,” Grym suggested.

“Same problem,” I said. My brows lifted. “That would require two dimensional hops instead of one. Unless…”

Ribbit! sayeth the fat squish down by my feet. We all looked down at Mr. Slimy. He blinked up at me. I can up my wattage, he told me. The little tree frog and I both can.

His name is Zoom, I told the squish.

Slimy shrugged. He’s kind of a dummy, but he has a lot of power. And so do I.

A dummy? Why would you say that? He seems very nice.

He thinks flies are better than crickets. Clearly, he’s an idiot.

I think egg rolls are better than any bug. Does that make me stupid too?

Slimy snorted out a laugh in my mind. I can’t believe you had to ask. That’s a given.

I glared down at him.

“Um, Naida?” Grym asked. “What’s happening?”

I gave a guilty jolt. “Oh. Sorry. I was talking to the green bus.” I called him that because he’d been Rustin’s only transportation for the first several months I’d known him. When he’d still been the ghost witch. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective, the frog came out of the experience of having a disembodied witch sharing his skin with advanced thought processes and a ton of attitude. “He says he can help.”

Rustin cleared his throat. “Naida?”

I glanced his way.

“I’m not going with you on this trip,” he told me.

“You’re not? Why?”

“Somebody needs to keep an eye on things here. Since I’m not much good to you unless you want me to break out the chimera…”

Oh goddess, no! Not that! I didn’t say the words out loud, but the sentiment must have shown on my face.

He gave me a grim smile. “Yeah. It’s probably best not to bring him out in the demonic dimension. They’ll see it as a sign of aggression and get testy.”

“I’m staying here too,” Sebille said. “I’ll keep Wicked. New Baal is no place for a cat. Demons don’t like cats. When they see a cat, they have a tendency to attack first and ask no questions at all.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to come?” Sebille never backed down from a challenge. Maybe I needed to plan an intervention for her. “You know how much is at stake with this.
